Ameren Missouri – the electric utility serving Eureka and much of eastern Missouri, offers a generous rebate and incentive program for smart thermostats including Google Nest models. Through this program, Ameren residential customers can get $100 off qualified ENERGY STAR smart thermostats at purchase and additional cash rewards by enrolling in Ameren’s Peak Time Savings (Rush Hour) program. For example, on the Ameren Missouri Marketplace the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th generation) is listed at about $140 after the $100 rebate, and the Nest Thermostat E (Charcoal or Snow) for $1 after rebate. In addition, homeowners earn a $50 one-time signup bonus and a $25 annual bonus when they enroll their Nest in the Rush Hour Rewards demand-response program. These combined savings, plus the potential 10–15% reduction in heating/cooling costs from smart scheduling, make the Ameren Nest rebate very appealing.

How the Ameren Nest Rebate Works

Ameren’s smart thermostat program works in two parts: an instant rebate and a Peak Time savings incentive. First, Ameren Missouri residential electric customers receive an instant $100 discount on qualifying ENERGY STAR smart thermostats (including Google Nest models). To get this discount, you can purchase your thermostat through the Ameren Missouri Marketplace online store or approved retailers. If you buy from a local retailer, you simply submit a quick rebate application afterward to claim the $100. The rebate is available once per household on a qualifying cooling system (central A/C or heat pump).

After installation, enroll your thermostat in Ameren’s Peak Time Savings program to unlock the second part of the incentive. Peak Time Savings (a “demand response” program powered by Nest’s Rush Hour Rewards) rewards you for allowing the utility to briefly adjust your thermostat during high-demand events. Ameren customers earn a $50 signup bonus just for enrolling one Nest thermostat, plus an additional $25 each year they remain in the program. Participation is voluntary – you can override or opt out of any individual event – but most participants report hardly noticing the slight thermostat adjustment. In short, you buy a Nest (at least $100 off), install it, enroll in the program, and pocket an extra $75+ over time.

  • Step 1 – Buy the Thermostat: Purchase an eligible ENERGY STAR smart thermostat (such as a Nest Learning Thermostat or Nest Thermostat E) through the Ameren Missouri online store (instant rebate applied at checkout) or any local retailer. The Ameren Marketplace showcases models and prices (for example, Nest Learning is ~$239.99 list, $139.99 after rebate).

  • Step 2 – Get the Rebate: If you didn’t use the Marketplace, simply fill out Ameren’s online rebate form within 30 days of purchase and installation. Attach your sales receipt and proof of Ameren account to claim the $100 rebate. The rebate is mailed as a check (allow ~8 weeks for processing).

  • Step 3 – Enroll in Peak Time Savings: Once your new thermostat is installed, log into the Nest app and enroll in Ameren’s Peak Time Savings (Rush Hour Rewards) program. After your thermostat is registered with Ameren, you instantly receive $50. Then each year on your program anniversary you get $25 as long as you stay enrolled.

Ameren’s program materials note that qualifying smart thermostats must control a central air conditioner or heat pump in the home and be Wi-Fi connected. It also requires that all thermostats on the same system be from the same manufacturer to participate (so you couldn’t mix Nest and another brand on one system). As long as your Eureka home meets those criteria and you’re an Ameren Missouri customer, you’re eligible to participate.

Which Nest Thermostats Qualify?

The rebate covers several Nest models. In practice, all current Nest models sold at Ameren’s store qualify: the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (any generation up to 4th-gen) and the newer Nest Thermostat E (available in Charcoal or Snow colors). These Nest devices are ENERGY STAR certified. For example, Ameren’s online store lists the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) and the basic Nest Thermostat E for deep discounts after rebate. Other manufacturers also participate (ecobee, Emerson Sensi, Honeywell, etc.), but since we're focusing on Nest here, the key models are:

  • Google Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd and 4th generation) – full-featured smart thermostat with a round display.

  • Google Nest Thermostat E (sometimes called Nest Thermostat Charcoal or Snow) – a more affordable model with fewer features.

If you already own a qualifying Nest, it can be enrolled in Ameren’s program too (you still get the $50 sign-up, though the instant $100 would only apply on a new purchase). Ameren’s eligibility rules specify the thermostat must operate an electric heating/cooling system. (Note: If your home has only electric heat without cooling, you may not qualify because the program targets peak cooling events.)

Peak Time Savings (Rush Hour Rewards) Explained

The “Rush Hour Rewards” part of the program is what makes the Nest rebate truly valuable. Ameren Missouri will notify your Nest thermostat ahead of a Peak Time Savings event (typically a few hours during very hot summer afternoons, and occasionally a winter cold snap). The Nest thermostat automatically pre-cools or pre-heats your home in the hours before the event, then raises the setpoint by a small amount (usually up to 4°F) during the peak period. According to Google, this demand-response strategy reduces strain on the grid without sacrificing comfort. In practice, most homeowners report barely noticing the change. (You always have the option to adjust or opt out if needed.)

Enrollment bonuses are paid whether or not you experience events. That means immediately after you enroll your Nest, Ameren will credit your account $50. Every year thereafter, you get another $25 (as long as your thermostat remains enrolled). Over 5 years that’s an extra $175 in your pocket. Meanwhile, studies show Nest thermostats save significant energy, for example, Google reports that Nest thermostats saved customers 113 billion kWh of energy from 2011–2022. Even a modest 10% savings on your heating/cooling bills will often exceed the cost of the thermostat over time.

Is the Nest Rebate Worth It?

Almost invariably, yes. With the instant $100 discount and annual bonuses, the Nest often costs little to nothing out of pocket. For instance, as noted above the Nest Learning Thermostat drops from $239.99 to about $139.99 after rebate (and Nest Thermostat E models can be as low as $1). Then you immediately get another $50 back by enrolling, and $25 each following year. Add in the value of comfortable energy savings, smart thermostats help save you on monthly heating and cooling costs while maintaining your home’s comfort, and it’s a very cost-effective upgrade.

Smart thermostats bring other perks too: learning your schedule, remote control via smartphone, and energy reports. We've noted in our previous coverage of smart thermostats that smart thermostats let homeowners “reduce energy consumption and save money” because they optimize climate control around actual usage. In Eureka’s climate, where summer highs reach the upper 80s and winters dip below freezing, managing HVAC carefully can trim your bills. For most Ameren customers, the rebate makes the Nest essentially free, and the ongoing rewards turn it into a money-saving device.

How to Claim the Rebate and Find More Information

  1. Check eligibility. Make sure your Ameren Missouri account is active and your home has an eligible HVAC system. Ameren’s site or the Nest app will guide you through program terms.

  2. Purchase a qualifying thermostat. Log in at the Ameren Missouri Marketplace (amerenmissourimarketplace.com) or visit an Ameren Authorized Retailer. The instant $100 rebate will be applied for you at checkout. You can browse models and see final prices (for example, Nest Learning Thermostat for $140 after rebate).

  3. Install the thermostat. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions or hire a professional (recommended). This is where Saylors Systems can help, we are experts in Nest installations and can ensure it’s wired and configured correctly.

  4. Submit any rebate forms. If you didn’t use the Marketplace, go online to Ameren’s rebate portal within 30 days of installation. Provide your purchase receipt and account info to get your $100 check in the mail.

  5. Enroll in Peak Time Savings. In the Nest app, find the Rush Hour Rewards or Peak Time program and enroll your thermostat. Ameren will then automatically credit your account $50 and send you yearly $25 bonuses.
